LMHF Supports Automatic Dispensing Cabinets

Medication Management and Safety

Getting medications to a patient in a hospital bed used to involve 22 separate steps after the physician wrote the medication order. Most of the processes and documentation were manual.

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance is actively working with 8 other Hospitals in South Western Ontario to both improve our medication management and distribution processes and build in safeguards. Computerized medication orders, automated dispensing cabinets, and bar-coding of patients and medications are all part of this initiative. Our new process will involve approximately 8 steps. This work will ensure all patients receive the right medication, in the right dosage, at the right time.

LMHF supports Automatic Dispensing Cabinets

The mission of the Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance is to strive to provide the best possible care for the individuals they serve. In order to improve patient safety at LMH, Automatic Dispensing Cabinets (ADC) and medication carts were recently introduced into the patient care process. This equipment will help ensure safe, accurate, timely and efficient administration of medication to both inpatients and patients visiting Emergency.

The Foundation continues to support the mission of the Hospital and will be providing a donation of $420,000 to the Hospital to assist with the purchasing of these medication cabinets and carts.
